The Northwestern High School varsity cross country team has three seniors returning this year, one of whom was a state qualifier in 2015.

Timothy Wheeler placed 52nd at the Pennsylvania state meet last year as a junior.

Scarlett Seneta and Katherine MacFarlane are also returning seniors.

The Wildcats will host three home meets this year, showcasing the district’s scenic wooded course.

The first meet will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13, versus Conneaut, Ohio. The second is set for Tuesday, Oct. 4, versus Fairview and Iroquois, and the final home meet will be on Tuesday, Oct. 11, versus General McLane.

Head coach Rich Asmondy, who has been leading the Wildcat varsity runners for 16 years, said the team will also be competing the in what is known as the “largest meet this side of the Mississippi River” –  the McQuaid Invitational – on Oct. 1 in Rochester, New York. Last year, more than 7,000 runners - including Wildcats - competed.

Northwestern’s cross country program includes a middle school squad, as well as a newly added Quick Cats cross country club for students in kindergarten through sixth-grade.
