More than 800 lit pumpkins will light the night this weekend in Albion.

The Albion Future Farmers of America chapter’s annual Northwestern Community Pumpkin Walk will be held – rain or shine –  from 5 to 9 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 28, and Saturday, Oct. 29, at Northwestern High School.

Throughout this week, every student at Northwestern and Springfield elementary schools will carve a pumpkin to be displayed along the nature trail behind the school.

High School food science classes are busy preparing fall snacks, including pumpkin rolls, baked goods, cider, hot chocolate and flavored pumpkin seeds, to be sold at the walk.

“We’ve made about 20 batches of pumpkin seeds today,” Northwestern food science teacher Julie Schmidt said Wednesday. “The kids get to help choose and create the flavors.”

Tasty seed flavors ranging from salted caramel, to buffalo chicken, to cinnamon and sugar, to class favorite, beef jerky, will be available to grab for 50 cents per bag at the pumpkin walk.

There will also be face-painting and hay wagon rides.

FFA members will be accepting a $2 donation entry fee, and children under 5 walk free. Attendees should enter the front doors of the high school to start the walk.

Attendees are encouraged to dress up in non-scary costumes. The pumpkin walk is a family-friendly event.

This is the fifth year Albion FFA has held the growing event. Last year’s event drew nearly 800 people.
