Scarlett Seneta said she plans to be a chaplain in the United States Navy.

“Religion is very important to me,” Seneta said. “In the military, chaplains not only preach, but they are also there as a guidance counselor -to help others who are going through a hard time.”

But Seneta, a Northwestern High School senior, is already helping veterans.

As a project for Northwestern’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club, Seneta got a “wish list” from the Erie Soldiers and Sailors home.

“The list had things like hankies, decks of cards, simple stuff on it,” Seneta said. “They also gave me a list of things they need funds for like bands in the gazebo and other entertainment and activities.”

Seneta had students in the high school work on the wish list. She made donation cans and set them out at Albion area businesses.

Seneta’s emotional connection to the Soldiers and Sailors home led her to take her project larger scale – involving almost every student in the district.

“My grandfather lived at the Soldiers and Sailors home before he passed five years ago,” Seneta said. “I wanted to do something that would improve the quality of life of the people that live there – even if it was through a simply thank you card.”

Seneta’s brother, Orzeko Seneta, also serves in the Navy.

Northwestern Middle School eighth-graders wrote letters of appreciation, sixth- and seventh-graders wrote patriotic acrostic poems, incorporating art and color, and students at Northwestern and Springfield elementary schools colored pictures for vets.

Seneta will deliver everything to the Soldiers and Sailors home on Veterans Day.

She will then make a presentation of the project for an FBLA summit, to be held in December.

“I wanted to give back to those who have given me so much – I’m so grateful to live in this country,” Seneta said.
