Northwestern Elementary School teacher Sandy Greenlee took it upon herself to apply for a grant from Tractor Supply Co. this fall. The idea was to use the money for a garden in the school’s enclosed courtyard.

Her efforts paid off with a $500 grant, awarded to Greenlee by Principal Terry Trimble as part of an ongoing celebration of the school’s recent National Blue Ribbon award on Wednesday, Nov. 23.

Greenlee said this money will be used to start construction of raised beds and get startup supplies like dirt, seeds and veggies.

“We’re going to need more financial assistance. It’s the first time we’ve applied for a grant like this out of the new Tractor Supply in Edinboro,” Greenlee said. “And hopefully we can start in the spring.”

Greenlee said all children and parents of the school are invited to take part in the project.

First-grade teacher Nikki Campbell was also surprised with a $100 grant from Northwestern REC for the first-grade pod’s take home library -  books children can take home each night, read, and return the next day.

“It’s also a leveled library, so each child is taking home the right kind of books,” Campbell said. “The inclusion is great – probably 85 to 90 percent of kids participate every night.”

$100 NWREC Grant

Northwestern Elementary School first-grade teacher Nikki Campbell was awarded a $100 grant from Northwestern Rural Electric Cooperative (REC) on Nov. 23. From left are Campbell, with first-grader Megan Campbell, and first-grader Jacob Shaffer with Principal Terry Trimble.
