The 2016 Northwestern Wildcat marching band’s show is an artful feature about the world’s most precious commodity – time.

The show, titled "Race Against Time,” is broken into three movements band Director and Northwestern Elementary School music teacher Mike Wheeler said.

“The story behind the first movement is how busy everyone has become in modern times,” Wheeler said. “All of our lives are so busy... sometimes it seems like there's not even enough time to take a breath.”

Wheeler said the second part of the show is about how time stops for everyone at some point in life.

“Most people can think of a time in their life when time seemed to stand still,” Wheeler said.

“The last section of the show is about how eventually in life, you realize that you need to make time for the things that are truly important to you, no matter how busy you think you are,” Wheeler said.

The band competes in the Lake Shore Marching Band Association (LMBA) circuit, as well as in the New York State Field Band Conference (NYSFBC). There are three regular season competitions and a championship show in each circuit.

Northwestern’s marching band has been named LMBA champions seven times and and New York State champions five times.

“We have had two weeks of band camp and numerous rehearsals so far this year,” Wheeler said. “We began rehearsing music and marching back in March.”

Wheeler said this year’s band includes 20 seniors – the largest group he’s seen in the 25 years he’s been at Northwestern.

“My personal goal is to be the highest scoring band in the LMBA circuit out of the 15 bands competing in championships,” Wheeler said.

The band’s first performance of the season will be at halftime this Friday, Aug. 27, at the Wildcats’ first home football game versus Fort LeBoeuf.
