Seven Northwestern School District student athletes will compete today and tomorrow, April 1-2, at the 2016 Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling Championships – held for the second year at Erie Insurance Arena.
More than 1,000 wrestlers from across the state will gather for the biggest meet of their season.
“This is the culmination of a lot of work for these guys – you don’t luck your way into states,” Northwestern Youth Wrestling Club Assistant Coach Marcel Mallory said.
The wrestlers qualified for states after placing at the Area VIII Championships March 18-19 at Maplewood High School in Guys Mills, Pennsylvania.
Northwestern Youth Wrestling Club’s state qualifiers in the 9 and 10-year-old division are:
Kolton Sutter – First place – Area VIII Champion – 65 pounds
Lloyd Fountain – Second place – 65 pounds
Landon Wayne – Second place – 75 pounds
Clay Mallory – Second place – 85 pounds
Northwestern Youth Wrestling club’s state qualifiers in the 8 and under division are:
Corey Kowalksi – First place – Area VIII Champion – 110 pounds
Two other Northwestern student athletes – brother and sister Sebastian and Sierra Chiesa, who wrestle for Team Erie Viper wrestling club – also qualified for states.
In the 11 and 12-year-old division, Sebastian Chiesa placed second in the 65-pound weight class.
And in the 8 and under division, Sierra Chiesa - paving the way for female wrestlers everywhere - placed first in the 55-pound weight class, beating all boys on her way to becoming Area VIII Champion.
Mallory said Northwestern has more representation this year at the state championship meet than ever before.
