The Lead & Seed group at Northwestern High School designed and decorated the most powerful heroin awareness-themed Christmas tree and won a contest between high school Lead & Seed groups countywide.
Erie County Lead & Seed’s “Tree of Information” outreach project asked schools to decorate a Christmas tree with heroin facts and information about the nationwide heroin epidemic.
Northwestern students chose the theme “Don’t let heroin be your last act,” and featured many actors and musicians who have died from heroin overdoses or complications of addiction.
Lead & Seed’s mission is to reduce and prevent underage alcohol consumption, teen tobacco use and illicit drug use at the individual and at the school/community level. Lead and Seed provides the tools that communities need to introduce individual and population change in terms of preventing and reducing drug use. The goal is positive action, advocacy and involvement of youth leaders at he local, grassroots level.
“Our members are enthusiastic and hard working students from all grade levels, who recognize the need for positive role models and messages,” Adviser Lisa Stefanucci said.
The tree was on display inside the Millcreek Mall just outside BonTon through the New Year.
Lead & Seed members meet weekly throughout the year to plan and execute community service and awareness projects.
