Saturday Field Spraying
At the most recent Special Meeting of the
Board of Directors of the Northwestern School District, the Board approved
resurfacing for the High School Band practice field and the High School
Football Game Field. The purpose of this message is solely to inform you of
part of the process of the resurfacing of our Band and Football fields. Part
of the process of resurfacing will be the elimination of vegetation on the
fields. To accomplish this task, the contractor S& S Processing will be
spraying the weed killer “Round-Up”. This product is sold at most stores
that provide lawn care products, i.e. Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Home Depot, Lowe’s
etc. The contractor has assured us that the spraying presents no dangers to
your child’s safety or well-being. That being said, we have determined that
it would be in everyone’s best interest to have the spraying occur, when the
students are not scheduled to be on the school grounds. The spraying will
occur Saturday May 10, 2008 and will last approximately 1 – 2 hours. I thank
you for your understanding and support of the Northwestern School District.
Cafeteria Balances on the
Web
The program which allows for the checking of
cafeteria balances on the web is experiencing problems. A better
solution is being developed and will be available soon. In the
meantime, the existing system will remain in use, but could be unavailable
at times. Thank you for your patience.

Congratulations Northwestern C.A.T. Program:
The C.A.T. Training program received an award this summer
from the Erie Future Foundation. The award was presented in Harrisburg
on August third. Three of Governor Rendell's advisory commission
members were present. People were in awe of what a small school could
accomplish and were impressed with how the program puts student needs first.
Northwestern is the only district with a program like C.A.T. training.

Growth Screening Program
Pennsylvania Public Schools have been mandated to expand the
growth screening program to include Body Mass Index-for-Age Percentiles.
Schools will also be required to notify parents/guardians of screening
results with a recommendation to share findings with the student's health
care provider for further evaluation and intervention if necessary.
This program will first be implemented in grades kindergarten through four
the first year, and will expand to three additional grades each year
thereafter.
Please remember that the BMI is only a screening tool.
Your child's health care provider is the best person to evaluate whether or
not his/her measurements are within a healthy range. Please contact
the school nurse if you are opposed to having y
our child participate in this screening at school.
